The Prince Rupert Gateway handled 26.3 million tonnes of cargo in 2025, reflecting a 14 per cent rise in overall cargo volumes compared to 2024. The results reflect the consistent commitment between all Gateway partners to unlock capacity, provide greater speed to market, and actively diversify the trade that contributes to 7,940 jobs throughout British Columbia.

Moving forward, the Port of Prince Rupert is expanding its intermodal ecosystem with the $750 million CANXPORT project, a 400,000 TEU capacity transloading and break-bulk facility on Ridley Island operated by Ray-Mont Logistics and opening summer 2026. This project is important for Canada and received $150 million from the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB), marking the CIB’s first investment in a Port.

This is part of over $3 billion in expansion underway at the Port that aims to double our trade volumes past 50 million tonnes over the next decade, supporting our mandate to build a better Canada by growing global trade.

CANXPORT

Crews continued to make progress on the construction of CANXPORT, a $750 million rail-to-container transloading facility on Ridley Island operated by Ray-Mont Logistics. CANXPORT, formerly known as the Ridley Island Export Logistics Project, is on track to be completed summer 2026 and will strengthen the intermodal ecosystem at the port. The logistics centre will have an annual capacity of 400,000 TEUs for moving resins, grains, and pulp onto trains into shipping containers for export. CANXPORT is supported by a $150 million investment from the Canadian Infrastructure Bank (CIB).

South Kaien Logistics Park

In Q1 2025, the Canada Infrastructure Bank reached financial close on a $60.7 million loan supporting the development of South Kaien Logistics Park (SKLP). Metlakatla Development Corporation (MDC) has a strategic partnership with Prince Rupert Port Authority to develop the site. The primary tenant for the 56-acre park will be IntermodeX, with its 33-acre LinX transloading facility set to launch in 2027, adding 200 new local jobs. PRPA and MDC are actively engaged in identifying an additional tenant for the remaining 23-acres available at the fully serviced site.

Ridley Island Energy Export Facility

In Q4, 2025 AltaGas and joint venture partner Vopak announced a positive final investment decision on ‘Optimization One’ of the Ridley Island Energy Export Facility (REEF), committing an additional $110 million to the project to expand the terminal’s capacity by an extra 25,000 barrels per day. Construction on the $1.46 billion project continued to advance in 2025 with the first liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) accumulators arriving at the site along with components for the marine jetty. REEF will double LPG export capacity from Prince Rupert during its first phase of operations.

Trigon second berth

In Q4, 2025 Trigon Pacific Terminals Ltd. Marked a major construction milestone for the $173 million Berth Two Beyond Carbon (B2BC) project with the installation of eight concrete pile caps that will serve as the foundation for the future berth loading arms. Trigon’s B2BC will nearly double terminal capacity from 18.5 million tonnes to an estimated 33.5 million tonnes annually. B2BC is supported by a $75 million grant from Transport Canada's National Trade Corridors Fund.

Material offload facility

In Q3 2025, PRPA completed construction of a new material offload facility to support major project development on Ridley Island. Built over a nine-month period, the facility is designed to accommodate the delivery of sizable, prefabricated components required for large-scale project construction. The offload dock enables the safe transfer of oversized components from transport vessels for movement to their final installation sites.

Zanardi Bridge expansion

CN began construction activities on the Zanardi Rapids Bridge Project in Q3 2025 as part of a comprehensive plan to enhance the port’s rail infrastructure in line with the major port projects underway. The existing bridge can handle up to 24 trains per day but the new 1,600ft double-track bridge is designed to accommodate over 50 trains per day. The project is expected to be completed in 2027.

Control Tower Project

The Prince Rupert Port Authority’s Control Tower project is creating a digital twin of the Prince Rupert Gateway by integrating multiple data sources and consolidating monitoring systems into a single platform. This platform will enhance visibility, improve operational efficiency, and support better planning and procurement. The Control Tower project is part of the Gateway Data Visualization Initiative, funded by the National Trade Corridors Fund in 2024 to advance supply chain digitalization.

Gemini Cooperation

Global shipping leaders Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk officially launched the Gemini Cooperation in 2025, introducing a new East-West service network designed to improve reliability, connectivity, and sustainability across global trade routes. The partnership’s hub-and-spoke model connects more than 600 ports worldwide, including the Port of Prince Rupert, through a network of approximately 340 vessels, with a target of achieving more than 90% schedule reliability once fully implemented.

Northern BC Supply Chain Forum Report

The final report from the Northern BC Supply Chain Forum was submitted to the Government of British Columbia. The Forum featured a working group of key stakeholders and communities along the transportation corridors on Highways 16, 97, and 37 and the CN mainline. Their report featured recommendations and insights to advance opportunities in the region. PRPA led the development of the Northern BC Supply Chain Forum with support from the provincial government.

Alberta Industrial Heartland to Prince Rupert Economic Corridor Forum Report

In spring 2025, the Prince Rupert Port Authority hosted the Alberta Industrial Heartland Association to underscore the key role the Port of Prince Rupert plays in advancing Alberta’s Industrial Heartland’s growth.

Cruise tourism growth

In 2025, cruise passenger volumes increased 14 per cent from 2024 and this upward trend is expected to accelerate going forward. Prince Rupert Cruise Port hosted two notable inaugural calls, Holland America Line’s Noordam and Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas and welcomed a new cruise line, Royal Caribbean International, in 2025. The continued rise in cruise ship passenger volumes generates more local economic benefits and presents opportunities for new shore excursions and other tourism-oriented businesses.

Bunkering at Fairview Terminal

Wolverine Terminals completed its first full year of operations in 2025, providing bunkering to commercial vessel customers. The addition of marine refueling to the Port supports efficient operations and cost savings. Vessels do not have to divert to other ports to refuel or carry enough fuel for a round-trip voyage, which would displace potential cargo and increase shipping costs.

Operational Excellence

A coordinated effort between the Prince Rupert Port Authority and its many partners ensures management over every vessel, ensuring round-the-clock safeguards. The result has been the evolution of a global reputation for navigational safety. Marine Emergency Response Exercise

PRPA’s Gateway Operations team conducted a successful two-day Marine Emergency Response Exercise in Prince Rupert on February 19-20, 2025, in collaboration with port partners. The event trained and tested PRPA’s Port Security Operations Centre, marine team, and Emergency Operations Centre through a tabletop session and on-water exercise responding to a simulated emergency situation. A total of 75 participants from federal, local, civic, commercial agencies, and First Nations took part, along with seven boats during the live exercise.

Supporting seafarers

The Prince Rupert Port Authority’s Marine Operations team hosted our annual Seafarer BBQ on June 25 for International Day of the Seafarer. Ship crews and marine safety partners were invited to come ashore for the lunchtime event, with support from volunteers at Seafarers Mission Prince Rupert. PRPA also organizes holiday gift basket deliveries for crews stationed on vessels in the harbour in appreciation of the hard work and dedication of mariners working away from home over the holiday season.

Sea survival training

On September 2, 2025, the Gateway Operations team hosted a Sea Survival Training Session at Lucy Island. While this training is typically held in a pool, the team held it at sea, offering a more realistic and hands-on experience. This training is essential for promoting safety and ensuring everyone is familiar with the emergency equipment on our patrol vessels—especially since our Gateway Operations team is often first on scene during marine emergencies. 

Anchor analysis

In Q3 2025 the Canadian Hydrographic Services (CHS) completed side-scan sonar surveys and harbour bottom analysis of anchorages in PRPA’s jurisdiction. Side-scan sonar is used to detect objects on the sea floor and create an accurate map of the bottom of the ocean. The data collected by CHS will be used to provide a comprehensive risk analysis of harbour safety and support improved management for ships at anchor.

Search and rescue training

On December 13, 2025, the Prince Rupert Port Authority conducted a joint on-water drill with the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 64 Prince Rupert and Station 65 Lax Kw’alaams, Canadian Coast Guard and Metlakatla First Nation. Training together in the Prince Rupert Harbour enhances emergency response capabilities, strengthens inter-agency communication and supports a coordinated approach to marine safety.

Zero and low-emissions trucks

In 2025, PRPA continued its collaboration with Innovate BC to measure the effectiveness of low and zero emissions vehicles to support port operations. Gat Leedm Logistics tested four heavy-duty trucks as part of the pilot project, which continues until the end of 2026.

Renewable diesel project

PRPA and 13 Prince Rupert Gateway partners continued efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by adopting PetroCanada ‑EcoDiesel™ at scale. 2025 marked the second year of the renewable diesel project and this collaboration resulted in over two million litres of conventional diesel being replaced with the lower carbon alternative in port operations. The port launched the Renewable Diesel Initiative in 2024 as part of its Carbon Reduction Strategy.

Green Wave Award

Five companies were honoured for their exceptional participation in PRPA’s Green Wave program in 2025. COSCO Shipping Lines, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), Maersk A/S, Navigator Gas LLC, and BC Ferries were recognized for implementing technology to reduce their vessels’ environmental impact such as mitigating air emissions and underwater noise levels. 11 individual vessels were also acknowledged for their underwater noise mitigation. PRPA’s Green Wave program launched in 2013 and incentivizes shippers to voluntarily reduce air emissions along with underwater vessel noise in exchange for savings on their harbour dues. Quieter vessels reduce disturbance to marine mammals and other ocean life.

Environmental certification

In 2025, PRPA was recertified by Green Marine. A participant since 2010, PRPA’s scores for the program’s performance indicators are among the highest of any North American port and reflect its commitment to continuous improvement. PRPA has been carbon neutral since 2015, through enacting numerous greenhouse gas reduction initiatives and offsetting remaining emissions.

Expanding environmental baseline monitoring

PRPA’s Environmental Sustainability and Gateway Operations teams launched a pilot project using a solar-powered uncrewed surface vehicle (USV) from Open Ocean Robotics for data collection and monitoring. The USV can navigate challenging conditions and reach areas inaccessible to crewed vessels to gather wind and weather data, hydrophone recordings of humpbacks and other marine mammals and providing insight during fuel bunkering and vessels at anchor. Support for this project is provided by Innovate BC.

Tide Pool Pilot Project

PRPA installed 30 new tide pool blocks, as part of a habitat compensation project, at the Material Offloading Facility (MOF) in April 2025. These tide pools are permanent, located on the north and south side as part of the rock structure surrounding the MOF and clustered in groups of five placed at different tidal elevations. PRPA environmental compliance staff are monitoring the tide pools for temperature, dissolved oxygen, and the variety of animal and plant species present. Early results are promising, as the tide pools are already supporting algae growth and being used by crabs and barnacles. PRPA will also assess the effectiveness of the tide pool pilot project for future habitat compensation initiatives.

Supporting marine mammals

PRPA contributed to the Ocean Wise Whale Health and Monitoring Program by collecting environmental DNA samples to help researchers learn more about whale populations and guide conservation actions. PRPA promotes the use of the Ocean Wise Whale Report app, which was updated in 2025 to streamline whale detections from sources such as infrared data collected by WhaleSpotter, hydrophones and real-time whale sighting reports. In August 2025, the Whale Trail sign, located at the breakwater at the end of the dock in Cow Bay, was updated with a QR code linking to the newly revamped Ocean Wise Whale Report App. Anyone can report whale sightings to alert vessels in the area to slow down or change course to protect marine mammals from ship strikes.

Bat monitoring on Ridley Island

PRPA continues to gain understanding of the bat species that frequent Ridley Island through a 10-year study led by its Environmental Compliance team, which began in 2023. Data is collected monthly from three different types of artificial bat roosts located at six different sites on the island during the active bat season from April to November. The species of bats roosting at the sites are identified by their audio recordings and droppings, which are analyzed as DNA samples. In 2025, the team identified nine species of bats using the artificial roosts, including a new visitor, the long-eared myotis, which had not been recorded in previous study years.

Shoreline Cleanup

The port’s annual shoreline cleanup brought together 70 volunteers and 13 organizations to clean 2km of land at Seal Cove and the Atlin waterfront removing 617 lbs of waste. The port’s Environmental Sustainability team also learned about the Pre-Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Technique (Pre-SCAT) from Environment and Climate Change Canada, which involved taking part in field-based training and assisting with ground surveys. The SCAT method involves classifying coastline habitat risk to develop effective marine spill response shoreline cleanup plans.

The success of our trade gateway results in continuous improvements to the health and cohesion of northwest British Columbia. Supporting workforce and career development

In 2025, Prince Rupert Port Authority was once again recognized to the BC’s Top Employers list recognizing companies that have created exceptional workplaces. The continued growth and expansion underway at the Port generates more exciting job opportunities for the community. Representatives from PRPA attended career fairs hosted by Gitxaala, Kitselas, Hecate Strait, and Coast Mountain College to meet jobseekers, answer any questions they may have and inspire them to pursue a career with PRPA.

Port Community Day

The first-ever Port Community Day was held on July 5, 2025, featuring free activities including a barbecue at the Prince Rupert Seniors Centre, Swords & Sorcery on the courthouse lawn, a public swim at Earl Mah Aquatic Centre, and open gym sessions at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre. Port Community Day was sponsored by PRPA, AltaGas, DP World, Pembina Pipeline, and Trigon Pacific Terminals.

Spring Break & Pro-D Day Camps

In March 2025, PRPA hosted its inaugural Spring Discovery Week, inviting local children aged 6 to 12 for free daily workshops. The hands-on, interactive sessions took place in the Port Interpretive Centre during spring break. The specially curated, fun and informative activities explored various aspects of the Port of Prince Rupert.

Exploring career options at the Port

Adventures in the Port returned from May 27 to 29, 2025, providing youth from across Northwest BC with an up-close look at the many career paths available at the Prince Rupert Gateway. Presented in partnership with Community Futures and the Rotary Club of Prince Rupert, the three-day program enabled 14 high school students to have a first-hand view of port operations with support from port partners Pembina Pipeline Corporation, Trigon Terminals, Prince Rupert Grain Ltd., and AltaGas. Students visited DP World Prince Rupert container terminal, SAAM Towage Canada Inc., BC Ferries, Canadian Coast Guard, and IntermodeX. Adventures in the Port also included virtual presentations from WorkSafeBC and CN.

Providing healthy meals in local schools

PRPA maintained its support for the Breakfast Club of Canada (BCC), helping ensure students at each school in School District 52, approximately 1,780 kids in total, have access to nutritious meals helping them stay energized and better prepared to learn. With support from PRPA, BCC fed over 650 youth daily in Prince Rupert schools in 2025, up from 282 youth in 2024. As part of this ongoing partnership, PRPA also hosted special pancake breakfasts along with other BCC local partners at each school throughout November and December 2025.

Leveling the playing field

In 2025, KidSport Prince Rupert marked its fourth year as an independent chapter. Established with support from PRPA, the local branch of the national non-profit helps youth participate in organized sports. KidSport Prince Rupert approved 38 individual grants in 2025 to local families so children could take part in soccer, hockey, gymnastics, figure skating, taekwondo, and softball.

Fostering a love of reading

Families in Prince Rupert continued to receive free books through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in 2025. The program, founded by Dolly Parton, promotes a love of reading and is available to all local children aged five and under. Over the year, 2,916 carefully selected, age-appropriate books were delivered to support early literacy. The program is supported by the Prince Rupert Port Authority and administered locally by Change Makers' Education Society

Celebrating with communities

The Prince Rupert Port Authority is proud to support vibrant community events and festivals in the north including the All Native Basketball Tournament, Children’s Fest, Earth Day at Seal Cove Salt Marsh, Salmon Festival, Seafest, International Day of the Seafarer, Friendship House Block Party, National Indigenous Peoples Day, Hallowe’en Fest, Winterfest, Jingle Boat Express, Rampage Fights Cancer Hockey Campaign and Terrace Riverboat Days.

Earth Day at Seal Cove Salt Marsh

Over 400 people attended the fourth annual Community Earth Day Celebration in Seal Cove on April 27. PRPA co-sponsors the event with the City of Prince Rupert and Tourism Prince Rupert. The day featured a variety of family-friendly activities including seed planting, games, bike rides, crafts and performances by the Wii Gisigwilgwelk (Big Northern Lights) Dancers. Many local organizations and businesses came together to make the event a success including the North Coast Ecology Centre Society, Ecotrust Canada, Oldfield Creek Fish Hatchery, SkeenaWild Conservation Trust, Prince Rupert Library, Kaien Trails, NCMBA, Change Makers' Education Society, Mickey's Hot Dog Cart, and our gateway partners DP World and Trigon Terminals.

Oceanography Student Field Trip

In November 2025, Coast Mountain College (CMC) Oceanography students gained hands-on field work experience with PRPA’s environmental team. The CMC class was invited out on the AMWAAL, the port’s harbour patrol vessel, for a demonstration of zooplankton collection and to learn about the various tools used to conduct research and monitoring in Prince Rupert Harbour. The port’s environmental staff also gave a presentation to a CMC class showcasing PRPA’s environmental programs.

Charity Fundraising Support

In May 2025, Prince Rupert Port Authority staff lent their time and effort to support a charitable fundraising event, McHappy Day, to support kids and families in need. In total, 12 volunteers participated in rotating shifts to raise $15,098.71 for local youth and Ronald McDonald House BC and Yukon.

Enhancing local healthcare at Prince Rupert Regional Hospital

The Prince Rupert Port Authority contributed $108,000 to open a new Visiting Specialist Clinic at the Prince Rupert Regional Hospital through its Community Investment Fund. The new facility is fully equipped with medical and IT equipment that provides visiting doctors with the tools and support they need to conveniently and efficiently hold in-person clinics for local patients requiring a wide range of specialized services. Since opening in 2025, the Visiting Specialist Clinic has welcomed over 20 individual specialists and hosted more than 34 in-person clinics serving over 1,400 patients.

Rushbrook Trail safety and accessibility upgrades

Three steep sections of the Rushbrook Trail were releveled in spring 2025, to make the scenic waterfront walkway safer and more accessible. PRPA’s Community Investment Fund committed $50,000 to the project, bringing its total contributions to Rushbrook Trail revitalization efforts to $885,000 since 2018.

Port Edward Fire Truck

The volunteer Port Edward Fire Department replaced its aging fire truck in 2025, significantly improving its ability to respond to emergencies. The truck also provides fire crews with safer seating that better protects them from the elements when travelling to-and-from emergencies. The specialized vehicle was purchased through a partnership between PRPA’s Community Investment Fund and the District of Port Edward, with PRPA contributing $155,000 to the $500,000 cost. 

New gymnastics equipment

The Prince Rupert Gymnastics Association enhanced and expanded programming for gymnasts of all skill levels, from toddlers to adults, through its fourth collaboration with PRPA’s Community Investment Fund. The newly acquired equipment includes a vaulting table, springboard, pommel horse for the boys’ competitive program, bars and beam for the girls’ competitive program, and mats to support all gym activities, which include partnerships with local daycare providers and school groups and brings PRPA’s total contributions to the association to $225,000.

Modernizing the Prince Rupert Curling Club

PRPA has worked with the Curling Club to upgrade their facilities, committing over $336,000 through PRPA’s Community Investment Fund for essential equipment to make and maintain ice sheets. The latest project involved a $32,555 commitment from PRPA’s CIF for installing two new dehumidifiers to improve the ice surface, which will make the facility safer and more accessible.

New outdoor classroom and garden

Students at École Roosevelt Park Community School in Prince Rupert gained hands-on experience in learning how to grow healthy food in the new Salmonberry School Garden, which opened in June 2025. The Prince Rupert Port Authority partnered with School District 52 on the project, with PRPA providing $57,000 of the $117,000 total with funding provided through the Community Investment Fund. The garden includes raised garden beds, planters, picnic tables, compost bins, a tool shed, and a greenhouse, which enables year-round gardening, even in the damper and darker fall and winter months.

Shames Mountain Climate Resiliency project

Shames Mountain completed a Climate Resiliency project was completed in 2025 to address issues with overland drainage and allow the mountain to operate on a lower snowpack. PRPA’s Community Investment Fund committed $181,000 to the $431,000 project. This marked the fifth time since 2011 that PRPA and Shames My Mountain Co-op have successfully partnered to improve access and safety on the slopes.

Rising Tide

The Rising Tide program encourages youth to try new things, whether in sports, education, arts, or culture. In 2025, eight organizations received $8,000 in funding including: Prince Rupert Golf Club, Prince Rupert Minor Softball Association, Prince Rupert Gymnastics Association, Prince Rupert Minor Basketball Association, Prince Rupert Rugby Club, Prince Rupert Skating Club, Prince Rupert Minor Hockey Association, and Change Makers’ Education Society.

Voyage to Excellence

The Voyage to Excellence program rewards youth who have made it to the top of their field with the opportunity to experience higher levels of competition. The program provides grants to local groups who have qualified via zone-based competition to participate in the provincial and national championships. In total, nine groups received $10,800 in funding through the program in 2025, including: Charles Hays Senior Secondary (CHSS) Junior Boys Basketball Team, CHSS Wrestling Team, CHSS Drama Class, CHSS Senior Boys Basketball Team, North Coast Volleyball Club, CHSS Golf Team, Prince Rupert Gymnastics Association, CHSS Track & Field Team, and CHSS Senior Girls Volleyball Team.

Supporting northwest students

Recognizing the hard work and accomplishments of Northwest BC students, PRPA provided numerous awards and bursaries in 2025. A total of $18,000 was presented to students from Charles Hays Secondary School, Pacific Coast School, Lax Kw’alaams Wap Suwilaawksa, Coast Mountain College, and the University of Northern British Columbia.
